In 1970, Alfa Romeo created an evolution of the GTA Junior 1300, hoping to continue its competition success in the 1300cc class. The car now carried wide wheelarch extensions, 13-inch wide rims and tyres, and a wider track. At the same time, a new model with bigger capacity was created for the new 2000cc class, based on the 1750 GTV model with the same capacity engine (1779 cc), later bored out close to 2 liters (1985 cc) hence the "maggiorata" addition to the GTA initials. The main visual difference can be seen in the four front headlights and revised cockpit. The GTLWorkshop has modeled and reproduced both variations with historical precision and great attention to detail, which together with our brand new physics, produces an amazing driving experience.
At the start of the 70s Ford and BMW were having epic battles for the Touring championship. The climax of this fierce competition was the Ford Capri RS3100 and the BMW CSL 3.5l 24v. Both Ford and BMW competition departments were hard hit by the fuel crisis of late 1973 early 1974. The much anticipated full scale battle between the RS3100 and the new 24v CSL didn’t take place as BMW largely withdrew. Nevertheless in 1974 the RS3100 participated in 4 of the 6 ETCC rounds, meeting the works CSLs at two of these races. They also met at a couple of rounds of the WSC – the Nurburgring 1000 km and the Kyalami 9 hours. The RS3100 also entered 7 of the 8 rounds of the DRM, clashing with works CSLs at two of these. In 1975 things didn’t get any better for Ford. The competition department at Cologne was closed mid year and the a works RS3100 made just one appearance in the DRM,racing against a works CSL brought back from the IMSA series. Zakspeed took over as the “works” team, focusing on the Escort at this time. The RS3100 raced on in the DRM in the hands of privateers. Despite this ill fate, the Ford Capri RS3100 remains one of the most iconic and extreme cars of the 70s era.
